NAIROBI – Transport sector operators and business leaders in Eastleigh have pledged to collaborate with security agencies to combat crime and enhance safety in the area.

The commitment was made during a meeting on Wednesday with Kamukunji Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Fredric Muli and senior security officials.

The initiative aims to address increasing incidents of crime, robberies, gang violence, and gender-based domestic violence that have impacted the community.

DCC Muli assured residents and business operators of firm action against criminal activities.

He said the government and security apparatus in the county are keen on safeguarding both people and enterprises.

He described the surge in crimes as a threat to the macro and microeconomic growth of Eastleigh, a commercial hub known for its vibrant 24-hour economy.

“I am committed to working closely with all stakeholders to create a secure environment conducive to business growth,” DCC Muli said.

Mr. Muli said boda boda riders and taxi operators could unknowingly facilitate criminal activities by providing transport services to offenders.

The DCC emphasized the need for collaboration to ensure accountability and safety.

Eastleigh, home to over 80 shopping malls, is a major contributor to Nairobi County’s economy.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja noted in April that the area contributes over 30 percent of the county’s annual revenue.

According to data from the Eastleigh Business Community and the Nairobi County Government, the neighborhood’s multi-billion-shilling wholesale and retail enterprises are critical to its economic landscape.

The area has drawn national attention following a wave of violence, extortion, and gang activity in the past months.

This prompted security formations to deploy of a special police squad made up of officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation headquarters, Nairobi Region, and specialized units.

The newly appointed DCC Muli pointed out that illegal immigrants have been linked to the rise in violent crimes.

Security agencies report that the criminal acts have fostered a climate of fear.

Offences by gangs in the neighborhood have included acts of brutality such as stabbings, torture, and abductions.

Mr. Muli announced plans to collaborate with police to identify and profile undocumented individuals.

Offenders of criminal activities in the busy neighborhood have been identified as both foreigners and returnees living in the area.

Moses Lihanda, chairman of the Kamukunji Sub-county boda boda association, outlined plans to document boda boda stages to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.

“Introducing uniforms for riders will improve identification and ensure greater accountability within the community,” Lihanda told Kulan Post.

“Eastleigh bussiness generates billions of shillings, which directly support those of us working in the hub, the county and national government,” said Mr. Lihanda.

“It is our duty to ensure the area remains safe for both businesses and residents,” he added at the meeting of stakeholders.

Transport sector operators and business leaders in the area have committed to working with security agencies to combat crimea nd improve safety in Eastleigh.
