MANDERA—Two Kenya Defense Force soldiers were killed by police officers in a shootout at sheikh Barrow in Mandera County on Wednesday.

Local administrators who witnessed the incident said the Kenya Defense Forces officers replied to a friendly fire.

“The Administration Police officers opened fire after being attacked by the KDF officers who mistook them for members of  Al Shabaab, they were having lunch when the incident took place,” an officer who did not want to be named told Kulan Post.

Several other officers who sustained injuries were airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.

Earlier, Al Shabaab  tried to attack a General Service Unit camp in the area but were repulsed.

The Kenya Defense Forces have set up  camps around Sheikh Barrow to flash out members of the Al Shabaab who have killed and injured many since the Kenyan soldiers joined African Union Mission in Somalia late 2011.

Garissa, Mandera, Lamu, Mombasa and Tana river are among Counties  that have suffered attacks from the terrorist.

Four Security officers were killed on 2nd of January by suspected Al Shabaab terrorist in Mandera.

Two Police reservists and an Administration  Police  officer died on the spot while a KPR died in hospital.

Al Shabaab paraded bodies of the officers along Elwak-Kutulo road.

Mandera has been experiencing inter clan clashes before the Al Shabaab menace made the county more insecure.
