GARISSA—Police in Ijara will soon benefit from over Sh20 million worth of food and non-food items donated by area MP Sophia Abdinoor.

Speaking when she distributed the donations, Ms. Abdinoor said that local leaders ought to compliment government efforts to tackle insecurity in the region.

“The biggest chunk of the food donations will go to police stations and posts close to the Boni Forest where security agencies have been tackling Al-Shabaab militants hiding in the vast forest,” the MP said.

Ms. Abdinoor was speaking at Masalani sub-county headquarters over the weekend when she distributed the food items to deserving cases.

The items that included rice, wheat flour, dates, cooking oil among others were also distributed to orphanage centres and villages with less fortunate families.

“We decided to give police stations especially those near the Boni Forest who have been battling the Al-Shabaab militants hiding in the thick forest,” she said.

The MP who last week disbursed school fees bursaries to students from underprivileged backgrounds pledged to give full sponsorship for students pursuing nursing and teaching courses in the area.

This, she noted, was meant to avert shortages occasioned by the mass exodus of professionals immediately after the Garissa university attack by the Al shabaab militants in 2015 which left 148 people most of the students dead.

“This was the best way to address the shortages of teachers in our schools and health workers in our hospitals and other public health institutions,” she said.
