MANDERA—The meteorological department has warned of heavy downpours over the short-rains season starting from October to December.

Otin Dipo, the meteorological officer in- charge said the rains will be “disastrous” with flash floods that in the past swept away crops along River Daua, the only permanent source of water for irrigation farming.

He asked residents living along the river banks and places that usually flood to take an extra precaution.

The officer advised the flood water could be harnessed and stored to be used during the dry season.

Meanwhile the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) drought coordinator Mr. Hussein Alio has decried the heavy rainfall during the first week of October that has killed livestock due to their weak body condition.

Flash floods have cut-off transport and swept away pasture besides washing away crops along the river.

Over 80 % of the county has received sustainable rainfall but killed over 1000 goats in Gither ward, Mandera West alone.

The region is characterized with long dry spell with animals stuffing due to lack of pasture with the government giving mineral rich fodder pellets to sustain livestock.
