NAIROBI—President William Ruto has nominated Noordin Haji for appointment as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
Haji who is currently the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) returns to the intelligence unit after six years where he served as the Deputy Director Counter Organised Crime Unit.
In a statement by the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei said the President’s action is to facilitate the transition of the apex leadership of the NIS, ahead of the retirement of Major-General (Rtd) Philip Wachira Kameru.
Kameru was appointed as Director-General in September 2014 after an illustrious military career; having risen through the ranks to the position of Director of Military Intelligence in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
“HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT has, in exercise of the presidential prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government, caused the nomination of the next Director-General of the National Intelligence Service….. MAJOR-GENERAL (RTD) KAMERU, EGH was appointed as Director-General in September 2014 after an illustrious military career….In that position, he provided outstanding leadership that earned him international accolades” the President said.
Haji assumes office once his nomination is approved by Parliament.
“HIS EXCELLENCY THE PRESIDENT has transmitted the nomination to the National Assembly for consideration by Parliament, in fulfillment of the legal requirements set out under the Constitution and the National Intelligence Service Act” the statement reads.
Career Profile
The DPP who has served for six years holds Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Master of Laws (LL.M) degrees from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
Additionally, he has a second Masters Degree in National Security Policy with Merit (MNSPO) from the Australian National University.
He was admitted to the Bar in 1999, and thereafter joined the Public Service in January 2000 as a State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Office.
