GAROWE—Puntaland state authorities have deported 1,000 undocumented Ethiopian nationals from Garowe town, a move that analysts say is aimed at curtailing the region’s growing security concerns.

The deportees were held for two days before being transported by trucks to the Somali-Ethiopian border.

The crackdown on undocumented foreigners is reportedly driven by fears of foreign nationals possibly joining the Islamic State (ISIS) in Puntland.

Puntland regional officials have ramped up military operations against ISIS strongholds in the Al-Miskaat mountains of the Bari region.

Public sentiment has turned against foreign nationals, with demonstrations erupting at airports in both Garowe and Bosaso.

Local sources indicate that some of those deported had previously been denied entry into Puntland, while others had established small businesses in the region, adding complexity to the situation.

In a counter to allegations circulating in Ethiopian media, Puntland authorities have emphatically denied reports claiming that three Ethiopian citizens were killed in Bosaso and Garowe.

The Puntland Police labeled these reports as “baseless and misleading,” urging the public to disregard them.

Despite tensions, police confirmed an incident in Garowe where civilians threw stones at Ethiopian migrants.

Authorities quickly intervened, arresting those responsible while emphasizing that no serious injuries were reported.

“We warn the public against such acts, and we reiterate our commitment to protecting the safety and security of all citizens, including migrants,” the Puntland Police stated in their press release.

The situation continues to evolve as Puntland navigates the delicate balance between security and humanitarian concerns.
