NAIROBI—Since Garissa Township legislator and his county governor fell-out, high level meeting have been taking place in Nairobi and Garissa to soften their stand and draw the rift closer.

However, several attempt to bring Aden Duale and Ali Korane to the reconciliation table finally hit a snag after the well-connected elders failed to broker deal that would have led the two to burry the hatchet.

According to a highly placed source privy to the string of meetings, the elders from the Abudwaq clan wanted an end to the public spat. The meeting was mostly attended by former Chief of General Staff, Mohamud Mohamed who also happens to be the duo’s father-in-law.

“At some point, it became clear that some section of the committee members were not for the idea of reconciliation and wanted the rift to widen,” the source intimated to Kulan Post.

The source added that a business tycoon from Garissa, Mahat Kunnow had a war of words with Duale’s elder brother, Noor Barre when the former claimed that the Garissa MP was cause of the problem and should therefore be blamed for the fall-out. The elders wanted none of the leaders blamed for the political rift.

Kulan Post also understands that section of wealthy individuals from Abudwaq clan aligned with Governor Korane once pitched a proposal to lobby the MPs to remove Duale from the Majority Leader’s post. They lobby, it was suggested, would cost over sh 40m. Kulan Post could not authoritatively authentic if the idea is still active.

Duale and Korane disunity became public three months ago when the Garissa MP called on the governor to employ youths with university degrees.

“People with degrees from River Road are getting the jobs while the graduates are jobless. That’s a serous fraud,” Duale said, shooting the first salvo.

“Some people assume the county government is an extension of the National Government. We will employ who we want,” Korane responded.

The two also disagreed on the planned move of Qorahey market to a designated land away from the town centre.

Korane maintains the market occupies road reserve while Duale insists the road was paved with Constituency Development Fund (CDF) funds and that the traders have right to trade along the road.

Speaking in Garissa Town, Duale strongly opposed Governor Korane’s proposal to relocate Qorahey market to a new site, saying the eviction is a scheme by the county government to put the land to a different use.

“Not a single trader will be evicted from Qorahey market. Not today or even tommorrow. The proposal from the county government is misplaced. I wish to differ with that proposal because I know how the market place will later be used for,” Duale stated.

In May, Duale accused unnamed leaders from Garissa of being Khat chewers. In a press briefing the following day at his Garissa home, Governor Korane denied being a Khat addict adding that Duale was “making up the claim to make me look bad.”

“It’s not the first time he (Duale) accused me of being a drug addict. In 2007, he said I was a friend of the bottle,” Korane reacted with fury written all over his face.

Duale and Korane have always been political rivals since 2007 when the two vied for Dujis Parliamentary seat to which Duale came out victorious. In 2013, Duale reportedly undermined Korane’s quest to clinch gubernatorial seat while Korane pushed for another candidate’s victory.

But all that changed in 2017 when the two appeared in several rallies together under political harmony through tolerance.
