ISIOLO—The long period which new applicants from border counties used to wait for their National Identity Cards (IDs) to be processed and issued has been slashed to 21-days, Prof Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary has announced.

While addressing a public baraza in Moyale on Friday, Kindiki said that it was unfair for Kenyans from the border areas to unnecessarily wait for their ID cards for more than three years.

“Within 21 days after lodging the application, every citizen who is supposed to have an ID card must get it,” the CS proclaimed. The news came as a relief to millions of youths from Nothern Kenya and section of the Coast region who have suffered tedious process of gaining national ID cards.

The CS further directed the National Registration Bureau officers and the committees entrusted with vetting the applicants to reduce the protracted delays.
