NAIROBI—The government has extended the closure period of learning centers for a month owing to the Coronavirus pandemic. The schools will now be opened on June, 4 instead of May.

Speaking at Afya House when he appeared along top Health officials as part of the daily Covid-19 update, Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof Mughoha said much of the time the learners stayed at home as directed by the president last month “would be treated as a normal break in the educational calendar.”

“As they (children) stay at home, there will be interventions based on how the government handles Covid-19,” Mughoha said.

On the worry that the candidate in this year’s national examinations will not be able to sit for their test, the CS assured that “all students will be given time to make up for lost learning sessions before exams are administered.”

COVID-19 UPDATE

Over 40 days since the first case of the novel virus was confirmed in Kenya, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe underscored the success of the measures taken by the government to arrest the spread of the pandemic, saying more people recovered than fatalities.

The recoveries stand at 106 as fatalities currently clock at 14. The number of positive cases is now 355 after twelve more cases were reported on Sunday.

“I want to appreciate all those organisations that recognised the critical role of healthcare workers and have come up with initiatives to care for and appreciate them,” Kagwe said.

He listed Absa Bank Kenya, PLC and Minet Kenya Insurance, who are providing psychological support care to health care workers and those in quarantine and isolation centres.

Of the 12 cases aged between 14 and 60 years, eight are from Nairobi and four from Mombasa. All the 12 are Kenyans, but three have a recent history of travel from Somali.

The Nairobi cases are spread out between Kibera (2), Karen (1), Dandora (1), Eastleigh (1), Kasarani (1), South B (1) and Umoja (1). Mombasa’s four cases were from MvitaKuze (1), Mishomoroni (1), Mvita-Bondeni (1) and Barsheba (1).
