NAIROBI—Mandera Senator, Billow Kerrow has accepted the Garre elders resolution a day after the governor came out in defiance of the decision.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Kerrow said he will stand by the elder’s decision which was discussed in 2012. The resolution plainly stated that no Garre leader would serve for two consecutive terms.
“I totally support the decision of the Council which represents the views of the larger community that has expressly stated its preference for a ‘negotiated democracy’ between its various components to enhance internal equity, and unity of the community,” Kerrow said.
Kerrow called on his colleagues affected by the resolution to accept the outcome for the benefit of the clan unit.
“I want to urge all my colleagues affected by this resolution to accept the decision of the Council for the larger interest of the community, and step down gracefully,” Kerrow added.
Kerrow is the second leader to react to the Banissa outcome. He was preceded by govenor Ali Roba who reacted defiantly to the proposal, saying he would chart his own political future.
“I am here and I am here to stay. We applaud those who would like to abide by the decision of local council of elders,” Roba told Nation.
He added:, “I have been through hell and back in trying to institutionalise and operationalize the county government under the worst of all circumstances possible.”
Kerrow, however, warned those trying to loot in the face of the looming political uncertainty saying his office would be working to serve as a watchdog over public funds.
“Amid concerns that those in power in the county will be tempted to empty the coffers as the election looms, my office will exercise an even greater vigilance over the county resources” he said.
The Garre Council of Elders released a resolution on Sunday that called on serving leaders up from the governor, senator, the Women representative and MP’s not vie. The resolution elicited mixed reaction among Mandera residents.
