Nairobi — At least six people have died and over a dozen injured in a massive fire that tore through Kitui Village in Eastleigh South Ward, Kamukunji Constituency on Tuesday evening.

The fire, which engulfed over 50 households in the densely populated Majengo neighborhood, has left many families devastated and homeless.

Emergency teams, including the Kenya Red Cross, the Nairobi City County Fire Department, and local community members, worked together to contain the blaze and rescue victims.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that 16 people sustained minor injuries, all of whom were treated at the scene.

Search efforts are ongoing to locate potential additional victims amid the charred remains of the area.

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan described the tragedy as one of the deadliest fires to hit the constituency.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the residents of Kitui Village who have lost family members and friends in this fierce blaze, which rapidly engulfed a section of the neighborhood,” said Hassan.

He confirmed that the injured had been transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire broke out around evening hours, quickly spreading due to the tightly packed structures in the informal settlement. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Affected families are now grappling with the loss of loved ones, property, and shelter.

Humanitarian organizations, including the Kenya Red Cross and the County government disaster management, are providing immediate relief, including food, water, and temporary shelter, as they assess the full extent of the damage.
