KISMAYO—The leaders of Somalia’s federal member states on Saturday suspended all working relationships with the central government.

In a joint statement released by the Council of Inter-state cooperation after a 4-days forum in Kismayo, the state leaders blamed the government in Mogadishu for failing to manage the National security architecture well.

“The government is responsible for the issues that have worsened its relations with the Federal Member States, we came to the conclusion that we suspend our collaborations with the Federal Government until it mends its mistakes,” the leaders said in a official communique released at the conference.

The leaders said that they had cut ties with the central government over lack of implementing all the previous agreements.

The state presidents urged strengthening the constitutional power of the Senate for the regional states to get a concrete representation in the government.

The council which is made up of Jubaland, Galmudug, Puntland, Hirshabelle & Southwest regional administrations was formed last year in Kismayo amid standoff with the federal government.

The state leaders also accused the central government of refusing to share power and foreign aid with the regions in line with the federal structure .

The regional presidents include: Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas (Puntland), Ahmed Duale Gelle (Galmudug), Mohamed Abdi Ware (Hirshabelle), Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden (South West State) and Sheikh Ahmed Madobe (Jubaland).

“Our move came when we have realized that government could not prove its mechanisms to deliver its promises for the country, including the fight against Al Shabaab and the constitutional reforming process,” said Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, the leader of Puntland region.

President Mohamed Farmaajo called for an urgent meeting with the Somali regional leaders concerning the issue and proposed it takes place on September 17th and 18th in Mogadishu.
