MOGADISHU—An Iraqi will offer a helping hand to a total stranger compared to any other national in the world, a new survey has indicated.

Somalia became fourth in the list for the first time since 2010 when the survey was first commissioned.

“Eighty one percent of Iraq nationals reported helping someone they didn’t know in the previous month,” the Reuters quoted a global poll commissioned by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

The global index of charitable giving also reported that nationals in war-torn countries were more likely to be generous.

Despite suffering instability and violence, Iraq has twice been ranked top in terms of helping strangers. Libya, with its own internal conflict, was second on the list this year.

“I think that the lesson here is societies are incredibly resilient and that large scale disasters tend to activate a collective humanitarian response,”the international policy manager of CAF, Adam Pickering said.

The World Giving Index is based on data form a global poll by market research firm Gallup of 140 countries.
