NAIROBI—Somalis are increasingly cutting their own niche in the digital media sector as outlets grow in number.
Speaking during the launch of the Wafugaji News at a Nairobi hotel on Tuesday evening, Sunday Nation special projects editor Nyambega Gisesa said growth of digital media has favored the residents of the North.
“Perhaps we have more Somalis online than any other community in Kenya and that means a lot in terms of telling your own stories,” he said.
Ahmed Kadar, a founding member and editor of the site said platform is aimed at providing “current news and commentaries from the pastoral areas.”
Garissa Township legislator, Aden Duale said digital media in the region is growing at a faster rate.
“Digital media is the next big thing and the region is way ahead in the race,” he observed.
He also stated that devolution has empowered the people in pastoral areas while calling for mass registration of the Huduma Namba.
“Let us sign up for the Huduma Namba so that we are not victimed during the census, an area we should focus on,” Duale said.
He also downplayed calls for referendum saying there’s no ample time to make it happen.
