GARISSA— The Government has launched a Sh3 billion infrastructure programme in Wajir County, targeting electricity connectivity, affordable housing, student hostels and modern markets to accelerate socio-economic transformation in the North Eastern region.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who presided over an economic empowerment engagement for micro and small-scale traders in Tarbaj constituency, said the projects will spur grassroots entrepreneurship and improve livelihoods.

The DP, accompanied by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa and a delegation of national and regional leaders, announced that 18,000 households across Wajir will be connected to electricity under the ongoing programme.

“In Tarbaj constituency alone, the government is investing Sh556 million to connect 2,837 households to reliable electricity,” said Kindiki, adding that construction of four hybrid power plants, including one in Wajir, is underway to ensure sustainable supply.

He further noted that affordable housing projects and student hostels will create jobs for the youth while providing decent shelter.

Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow, who joined the DP in the empowerment forum, reaffirmed the commitment of local leaders to work with the Government in transforming Northern Kenya.

She urged residents, particularly women and youth, to take advantage of the opportunities being created through strategic investments.

The leaders present included Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Senator Abass Sheikh Mohamed, MPs Farah Maalim (Dadaab), Abdirahman Mohammed Abdi (Lafey), Adan Keynan (Eldas), Abdi Hussein Barre (Tarbaj), and several Members of the County Assembly, among others.
