grenadeOne person was killed and eleven others injured Monday night in what is suspected to be a terror attack.
The 8:15pm attack on Ngamia Club, which is frequented by civil servants, saw the death of one man.
The injuries were rushed to Wajir Referral hospitals for treatment. Two of them were discharged while the body of the deceased was taken to the hospital mortuary.
According to the watchman of the nightclub Mr. Caleb Anyora, the attackers first hurled two explosives from outside the club, and then entered forcefully while spraying bullets indiscriminately. Two security officers inside the club at the time of attack shot back and the attackers fled.
“I cannot [exactly] tell the number of the gunmen, but they were many and had their faces covered.” he recounted.
This was followed by gunshots which lasted for over fifteen minutes.
Business as well as movements came to a standstill in the town as security officers shot in the air to neutralize the situation.
The attack come barely eight hours after Wajir County governor Ahmed Abdullahi called for an end to the tribal clashes and focus on the fight against Al-Shabaab which he termed as the common enemy.
“A lot of attention and government resources are spent on settling tribal disputes; resources that would have been used to fight Al-Shabab. We request the warring communities to end the tribal menace once and for all so that we can focus the fight against Al-Shabaab and insurgency,” he said while speaking during the World Aids Day celebrations in Wajir.
This is the ninth attack in Wajir since September last year, but the police and the local leaders have been dismissing them as either criminal activities, political ill motives or as a result of business rivalry.
In a similar grenade attack July this year, Wajir county Deputy Governor Abdi Hafith Yarow is on record terming the attacks as criminal activities perpetrated by individuals with intentions to give the impression that Wajir county is risky.
He said there are instances where business cartels smuggling sugar along the border create such tensions to divert the attention of the security officers.
“We believe that the attacks in the county are conducted by criminals who wish to settle scores though some orthodox means. We are talking to the stakeholder and security apparatus to fast-track investigations into the matter,” he said.
No one has so far been arrested in relation to last night attack and no one has claimed responsibility.
