MOGADISHU—In a country where the echoes of civil unrest often overshadow hope, one young man stands firm, determined to invest in his community rather than seek opportunities abroad.
Rufai Mohamud Hussien, a passionate educator and proud graduate of SIMAD University, embodies the transformative power of education in Somalia.
With a chalk in hand and a Math textbook tucked under his arm, Rufai passionately explains the intricacies of matrices to a class of 35 eager students in Adado.
Dressed in a crisp white shirt, black trousers, and polished shoes, he exudes confidence, proudly representing the values instilled in him by his alma mater.
“Graduates from SIMAD University are distinctly different from others in the country,” he asserts, a smile breaking across his face as laughter ripples through the classroom.
“Our professionalism, etiquette, and soft-spoken nature set us apart,” he noted

Rufai’s journey began in 2014, when he completed high school in Adado, a town devoid of higher education options. After losing his father at a young age, the weight of responsibility fell heavily on his shoulders as he cared for his elderly mother.
“Traveling to Mogadishu for education was financially impossible, and leaving my mother was never an option,” he reflected in an interview with Kulan Post.
Orphaned amid the chaos of the Somali civil war, Rufai chose a path less traveled by many of his peers, who fled to safer countries, often risking their lives in perilous journeys across the Red Sea.
“I was born into turmoil,” he shared. “I witnessed violence that children in peaceful nations can hardly imagine. Yet, I am hopeful as I see my country slowly healing from the wounds of conflict.”
Instead of seeking refuge abroad, Rufai found the courage to remain and contribute to his homeland.
“If everyone leaves Somalia, what will become of our nation? Our resilience shines through even in exile, but we must build our future here,” he emphasized.
In 2015, a significant change occurred when SIMAD University opened a branch in Adado, offering programs in education and health sciences.
Rufai seized this opportunity, enrolling in the Faculty of Education with a focus on Math and Physics.
“My passion for these subjects made pursuing a degree in Math-Physics feel like the right choice,” he explained.
At SIMAD University, Rufai discovered more than just academic rigor; he found a nurturing community that prioritized personal growth and civic engagement.
“Our lecturers inspired us to dream big and lead confidently, both locally and globally,” he noted.
SIMAD University has gained recognition as one of Africa’s premier educational institutions, consistently ranking high in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.
Its commitment to attracting skilled professors and enhancing academic offerings sets it apart as a beacon of hope for Somalia.
Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and a comprehensive library, SIMAD fosters an environment that encourages innovation and creativity.
Rufai graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education in July 2021 and soon applied for a teaching position with the Somali government.
After a competitive selection process, he emerged as one of the few chosen candidates.
“Many of my friends from other universities were not selected, and I attribute my success to the exceptional education I received at SIMAD,” he reflected.

Rufai’s story is more than just personal triumph; it symbolizes the broader impact of SIMAD University on Somali society.
By offering free education to local students in the Faculty of Education, the university empowers young individuals to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
“My commitment to serving my community without seeking rewards proved fruitful when I completed my degree through a scholarship at SIMAD,” he shared.
As Somalia continues to navigate the challenges of rebuilding from conflict, institutions like SIMAD University play a crucial role in shaping the future.
By cultivating a generation of skilled educators and leaders, SIMAD is not only transforming lives but also laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and stable nation.
In a landscape where many have sought refuge in distant lands, Rufai Mohamud Hussien stands as a testament to the power of education and the indomitable spirit of those who choose to remain and uplift their communities.
Through his work as a government teacher, he exemplifies the profound impact that quality education can have on individuals and the collective future of a nation.
