MOGADISHU–-The government of Turkey has strongly condemned the Al Shabaab attack in Mogadishu that left 6 people dead and dozens wounded.
In a press release dated September 10, the Turkish ministry of foreign affair termed the attack as “treacherous” which aims to undermine the stability of Somalia.
“We have learnt with great sorrow the terrorist attack perpetrated in Mogadishu, resulting in numerous deaths and the injury of many others,” read the statement.
“We strongly condemn this treacherous attack that aims to undermine the stability of Somalia. We wish God’s mercy upon those who lost their lives, a speedy recovery to the wounded and convey our condolences to the Government and the people of Somalia.” added the statement.
Al Shabaab has attacked two local government offices in 8 days.
On September 2, a suicide car bomb destroyed the headquarters of the neighboring Howlwadaag district, killing six people.
This Al Shabaab attacks have proved vulnerable with fears of more attacks on other district Headquarters or less-protected offices.
Turkey is a major supporter of Somalia and continues to build key infrastructure across the Horn of Africa state.
Every year, hundreds of Somalis receive scholarships from Ankara to study in Turkish universities.
In September 2017, Turkey opened its biggest overseas military base in Somalia’s capital. The facility was aimed at training more than 10,000 Somali soldiers.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has visited Mogadishu twice, and when he made his first trip there in 2011 he became the first non-African leader to visit the war-ravaged nation in 20 years.
On July 2018, President Mohamed Farmaajo to witness inauguration of Erdogan as Turkey’s first executive President.
