Uganda withdrawing its troops from Somalia

The Ugandan military has said that it has begun withdrawing its troops that has been serving in the African Union Peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

This moved announced on Wednesday will see African Union soldiers’ reduced by 1000 in number by the end of the year.

There are around 20000 soldiers serving in the African Union mission in Somalia currently.

Uganda has more than 6,000 troops present in Somalia. They are the biggest contributor and entered the country first in the year 2007.

Other countries that are expected to reduce their troops by 31st of this Month are Djibouti, Ethiopia, Burundi and Kenya.

The international Community which backs the African Union wants the Somali soldiers and police to take over the security situation in the country.

Efforts to strengthen and develelop Somali national army has gained grounds.

African forces have severally been accused of corruption among others though they have received some praise for bringing stability in most parts of the country.

Two months ago, a maasive bomb attack in Mogadishu that killed more than 500 people was blamed on Al shabaab, the deadliest they have ever carried out agianst the United Nations-backed government.
