NAIROBI—Umma University, the largest Islamic private university in Kenya has today launched the Umma University Students Support Program.

The program is aimed at providing financial aid for Umma University students in order to produce well rounded graduates who will utilize their knowledge and skills to empower their communities.

Speaking at Laico Regency hotel where she launched the program, Education Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Amina Mohamed hailed the program saying it will benefit Muslim students.

“This is a great unique program that will benefit the needy and hardworking students and hopefully they will be of benefit to the Islamic community after graduating,” Amina said.

The event was attended by Members of parliament and other leaders from the North Eastern region.

The Chancellor of the University Abass Guled said the university through this program will provide full scholarships, partial scholarships and interest free study loan.

“We have resources ourselves, if we manage them well we can be self-sufficient and help the less fortunate in our society,” Mr. Guled said.

He added that the country has enough resources and they don’t need any assistance from anyone. He urged the leadership of the country to stop relying on donations from other countries.

“Our brothers from the Middle East are giving us resources but for how long are we going to depend on them? For how long yet we have resources in this country. Plenty of it,” Mr. Guled added.

He also praised the Northern Frontier District lead by the Governor of Mandera and Marsabit who are chairman and vice chairman respectively for their support.

Umma university main campus is based in Kajiado town.
