Umulkheir Harun has formally submitted her application to her community for endorsement as a flag bearer for the Garissa County Women Representative seat in the 2027 elections.
The application was received by elders in Garissa town on Thursday, marking the official beginning of her bid to secure the county leadership position.
Elders from various clans in Garissa influence the political landscape and play a crucial role in determining who gets elected. Their endorsement is a key step for any aspiring candidate.
During her meeting with elders from a section of the Samawadal sub-clan, Mrs. Harun emphasized her commitment to community-driven governance and inclusive development.
While she submitted her candidacy to her community as part of the traditional formalities, she reiterated that her vision and leadership stand to represent all the people of Garissa County, regardless of clan or background.
She expressed her desire to ensure that all communities have a voice in Garissa’s leadership and promised to champion unity, equity, and meaningful representation.
The elders, who hold significant sway in local politics, acknowledged her leadership experience and commitment to public service.
Umulkheir is currently serving as a Member of Parliament in Kenya, having been nominated to the National Assembly through the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party — one of Kenya’s oldest and most influential political outfits.
The party is known for championing human rights and progressive policies aimed at addressing poverty, justice, and socio-economic challenges.
Before entering Parliament, Umulkheir founded and led *The Keahso Alliance*, a non-governmental organization focused on empowering youth through education and leadership.
She has worked with several reputable institutions, including the European Union, the Aspen Institute, and other national and international humanitarian organizations.
Mr. Farhan Ahmed, a resident of Garissa, said the youth leader has consistently demonstrated dedication to public service since joining the National Assembly.
“Her experience in governance and her ability to deliver on mandates make her a strong candidate for the county seat,” he said.
He added, “We will carefully evaluate her request alongside others who will come forward. Our decision will be guided by the community’s best interests.”
As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape of Garissa is beginning to take shape. Mrs. Harun’s application signals the start of intense consultations among elders, political leaders, and the wider community.
The decision of the elders will ultimately shape the race for the Garissa County Women Representative seat and other key elective positions. In the 2022 general elections, Garissa County had 201,473 registered voters.
Located in northeastern Kenya, the county’s politics remain deeply rooted in clan-based decision-making, with elders playing a central role in identifying and endorsing candidates for leadership.
