Wardere Hassan has officially declared his bid to vie for the Wajir County Senatorial position in the 2027 General Elections.

The announcement, seen by Kulan Post, underscores Wardere’s commitment to addressing the county’s longstanding challenges while harnessing its untapped potential.

Wardere, a well-placed political figure in Wajir County, is known for his advocacy in community development and pastoralist rights. He emphasized that his decision stems from extensive grassroots consultations.

“This decision has not been made in haste,” Hassan stated in his declaration. “Over the past weeks, I have been deeply engaged in consultations with elders, religious leaders, youth, women, professionals, and community representatives across Wajir,” Wardere, who run in the 2022 elections as deputy governor for Mohamed Elmi, noted in the declaration statement.

He continued: “These conversations have been honest, inspiring, and deeply grounding. I am listening to the voices of Wajirians from every corner of our great county because true leadership begins with the people.”

Wajir County is home to a large pastoralist population and boasts vast resources, including livestock, renewable energy potential, and cultural heritage.

However, it grapples with issues such as insecurity, water scarcity, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to education and healthcare—challenges exacerbated by climate change and marginalization from national development agendas.

Wardere’s bid comes at a time when devolution, now over a decade old, is under scrutiny for uneven implementation across counties. In the statement, Wardere highlighted the county’s strengths and the need for transformative leadership.

“Wajir is a county blessed with immense potential, ability, and talent. Despite that, we continue to face challenges that require bold leadership, accountability, and a unifying vision,” he said. “My desire to serve as your Senator is driven by a genuine passion to be part of the solution and to represent our people with dignity, to safeguard our interests at the national level, and to ensure that every Wajirian feels included in our county’s progress.”

Wardere outlined a vision centered on unity and empowerment, promising to build a leadership model based on core values.

“Our journey is one of hope and purpose. We are building a leadership model founded on integrity, transparency, and inclusivity,” he affirmed. “Together, we can strengthen devolution, empower our communities, and open new opportunities for our youth, women, and pastoral families.”

The declaration has already sparked discussions among Wajir residents, with some viewing it as a fresh alternative to incumbent politics.

Local elder Ahmed Farah welcomed the move, noting, “Hassan’s approach of consulting widely shows he understands our traditions and needs.”

Meanwhile, youth activist Amina Osman expressed optimism: “We need leaders who prioritize inclusivity, especially for women and young people who have been sidelined.”

As consultations continue, Hassan called for collective support. “As I continue these consultations, I ask for your support, prayers, and guidance. I believe that with unity, trust, and collective effort, Wajir can rise to new heights,” he said. “I believe that we can come together with a shared mission to build a better, stronger, and more prosperous Wajir for all.”

Political analysts suggest this early announcement could set the tone for competitive races in marginal areas, where clan dynamics and resource allocation often dominate campaigns.

With the 2027 elections still over a year away, Hassan’s entry adds to the growing list of aspirants eyeing senatorial seats amid calls for more accountable representation in the Senate.

Wardere’s background in community mobilization positions him as a contender focused on bridging local aspirations with national policy. As Wajir looks ahead, his campaign promises to emphasize hope over division, potentially reshaping the county’s political landscape.
