GARISSA— A total of 346 students were Confered with degrees and diplomas at the first graduation ceremony of the Garissa University College. The institution overcame several hurdles, chiefly the terror attack in April 2015 when more than 147 people were killed in the compound by Al Shabab.

North Eastern leaders then came out strongly to defend the university from closure.
On Thursday, some of the leaders came back to talk about the achievement.

“Garissa University has come a long way to reaching this far. Since inception, the university has faced enormous challenges of financial inadequacy and insecurity, yet it has remained resilient and eventual triumphant leading to this graduation.
The worst threat, of course, was the terrorist attack on 2nd April, 2015 where 148 lives were lost.”
~Garissa Township MP, Aden Duale during his speech as the chief Guest.

“A milestone for Northern Kenya and a bullet into the eye of terrorism. Congratulations to all Garissa University graduands.”
~Aden Keynan, MP Eldas Constituency.

“Today’s graduation is a significant milestone in the history of the university and the region as this maiden graduation ceremony is an expression of our county’s and country’s resolve in defeating terrorism following the heinous attack on April 2015 when the lives of 148 innocent lives were cut short by the contemptible alShabab terrorists.”
~Abdi Daqane, Garissa County deputy governor.

“Today’s graduation is like no other as this momentous day comes 4 years after the deadly attack by Al-Shabaab that lead to the death of 148 innocent lives. I would therefore like to commend the leadership of the university led by Prof. Ahmed O. Warfa, the leadership and people of Northern Kenya for their resilience and efforts in ensuring that the dreams of these terrorists didn’t come true.”
~Ahmed Werar, Wajir County deputy governor.

“Today, I have been privileged to grace the graduation ceremony of my constituents at Garissa University. It is so nice to see our young folks pass through this prime time in their lives.”
Mohamud Oomar, Wajir South MP
