NAIROBI—The news that the current County Commissioner of Makueni, Mohamed Ahmed Maalim bagged an award as the best county administrator in Kenya is news to many but to the people of Mombasa and Makueni, it was long overdue.

Maalim was awarded by the Public Service Commission on 6th December 2019 where he was recognized and rewarded alongside other 14 public servants for exemplary performance in various award categories during the 2019 Public Service Excellence Awards (PSEA).

The commission recognized him for paving access roads leading to the beach where land grabbers took over. The public have long complained of the blockage and it was only Maalim who paved the way during his tenure as the county commissioner of Mombasa.

At the Coast, there has been growing concern over residents being denied access to the beaches for various reasons. The taste for beach plots by developers seeking to have good view of the blue waters of the Indian Ocean and security reasons have been cited for the limited routes to the sea at that time.

Wealthy homeowners at the Coast want privacy and some have gone ahead to construct walls blocking the public routes.

“I commend you for the good governance, integrity and exhibiting selfless leadership in service delivery,” head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua said at the event where he was the the Chief Guest. He also called upon the rest of public servants to emulate them.

In various individual categories, winners included Umi Said Athman, Senior Clerical Officer; Stephen Garama Thethe, Assistant Chief; Nyandoro David Nyambaso, Principal Land Registrar, and Munyendo Joseph Nanzala, Land Surveyor I.

Others were Hezron Michieka Momanyi, Chief Economist; Lucy Wanjiru Kabaya, Deputy Internal Auditor; Hassan Hussein Abdullahi, Information Officer I; Teckla Atitwa Chai, Chief; Leonard Kwinga Kausya, Principal Economist; and Police Constable Jairus Mulumia.
