GARISSA—Junior staff at the Garissa County government who address the media are now under strict directive not to as officials formulate framework on media engagement.
In a memo by the County Secretary and Head of County Public Service dated November 15th, the only County officials allowed to address the media are the Executive Commitee members (CEM) and the Chief Officers. Even the Chief Officers are required to obtain permission from their relevant CEMs.
“That has resulted in dissemination of wrong and unverified information to the public,” the memo said in part.
The unprecedented hard stance was caused by departmental directors and their deputies who speak to the media during project launches and when reached for comment by reporters. Insiders told Kulan Post than some officials were taking credit for the projects, denying the governor and top officials much needed airtime.
“We are in the process of developing a comprehensive County Media policy to regulate media engagement,” the memo continued.
