GARISSA—Leaders in Garissa County have urged the youths from the area to go for jobs that need technical skills rather than being after elusive white collar employment so that they can rely on themselves.

Speaking in Garissa town on Monday, Abdi Dagane, the Garissa County deputy governor said that negative attitudes among the youth has prevented them from pursuing technical courses.

The deputy governor said the county government is focusing more on the youth attaining technical skills. He said the county government has invested heavily on the Garissa Vocational Training Institute which is free for the youth hailing from the county.

Mr. Abdi was speaking during an enrolment drive of vocational training which was implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation and funded by European Union and the Garissa county government.

Habiba Nasib, the county executive committee in charge for education  said  it was disastrous that technical institutions have very limited students despite the county government sponsoring the courses.

“We are aiming to be self-reliant, so that all plumbers, electrician and other technical skilled personnel come from our county,” she said.

Members of the Garissa County Assembly on their part assured the executive of their support to ensure youths gets necessary technical skills saying the devolved units can only employ a handful of youth.

Abakaile Ward Rep and the house minority leader Mohamed Ali said the county assembly is ready to implement necessary legislation to help the youth in the county.
