Eldas Member of Parliament Aden Keynan want the government to give relief food to locals who plant trees.

He said the initiative is part of a wider move to encourage afforestation. “We made a resolution here (Eldas) that people must get relief food and other government services only after they plant a tree,” Keynan said at Eldas when he led afforestation project at the constituency through his foundation—Aden Keynan Foundation.

The legislator noted that the move could end desertification and minimise effect of droughts. “Chiefs and local administration hierarchy must take up the matter and encourage the afforestation exercise at their local administrations,” he urged. Wajir County Commissioner, Mr Chelimo said the government would take the resolution as a challenge and would instruct the chiefs to spearhead the way. “Chiefs and assistant chiefs, this should not end here. This is a serious matter,” he said.

Kenya Forest Research Institute will set up research plant in Eldas. Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources, Ms Margaret termed the project ambitious, saying it would go along way in realising 10% tree cover across the country as part of the Vision 2030. “Such projects will in future mitigate the effect of droughts,” she said.
