MANDERA—Suspected Al Shabab militants have attacked Mandera town Monday morning.

“Mandera is under attack this morning from 2:39 am,” Bashow Alas , a resident shared on Facebook.

“We were woken up by heavy gunshots and artillery,” he added.

Ahmed Abdirashid reporting for Kulan Post said the assailants hurled explosives at the Equity Bank building in central Mandera. No one was injured in the attack.

“They (attackers) hurled what appears like a grenade…It partly ripped off the building,” he said.

The county security heads said they will issue statement later in the day.

Meanwhile, one police reservist is feared dead after suspected Alshabab gunmen opened fire at the KPR officers on patrol at 3 am Monday morning around Elwak Service station near Deputy Governor’s residence in Mandera town.

Mandera County is under dusk to dawn curfew since October when Al Shabab militants attacked a low-cost guesthouse in the town, killing 12.
