NAIROBI—The rate of divorce among couples in the country is on the rise, county Chief Kadhi Ahmed Shariff Muhdhar has reported.

Speaking in his office in Mombasa, he said 2017 has seen a rise in separation of married couples in Lamu and Mombasa counties compared to previous years.

“Today as we speak, about 45 per cent of the cases filed from January are on divorce alone.” he said.

The prevalence of the islamic religion among coastal  residents make them prefer the Kadhi’s court to settle divorce matters.

Wajir county Kadhi Sheikh Athman Abdiwahab also discolsed over 95 divorce cases had been reported in the county by June this year.

He further revealed that 70 per cent of court cases were related to divorce.

Ahmed Shariff Muhdhar called on Islamic scholars and clerics to address the matter to protect the sanctity of marriage.
