Kenya Broadcasting Corporation

                                                         Kenya Broadcasting Corporation

NAIROBI—Kenya Broadcasting Corporation staffs who are members of the Communication Workers Union (COWU) today morning downed tools demanding the implementation of a 13.5 percent salary increment.

Managing Director Waithaka Waihenya, in a statement, said the delay in inking the CBA was occasioned by ongoing deliberations with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

“As soon as that is obtained the CBA will be signed forthwith. In the meantime, the Corporation is doing everything possible to ensure the transmissions are not affected by this industrial action.” He noted.

He explained that  KBC is a state Agency and therefore bound by all laws and rules governing state bodies and therefore cannot sign or implement any CBA without the approval of SRC.

” On 14th June, 2017, COWU issued a strike notice, but the Corporation sought redress from the Ministry of East African Community (EAC), Labour and Social Protection, and the parties were advised to dialogue and seek guidance on implementation from Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and the Treasury.” said Mr Waithaka.

The staff held demos outside the State corporation’s offices on Harry Thuku Road in Nairobi.

However, normal business continues in various departments including the newsroom as members of the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) had not been consulted by the Communication Workers Union on the industrial action.
