A light aircraft flying to Serengeti National Park on Wednesday killed 11 in Northern Tanzania.

The plane belonging to a safari company, coastal aviation which conducts flying travels in East Africa region, said the Cessna Caravan, carrying 10 passengers and a pilot had crashed in the Empakaai crater area.

“We are deeply saddened to report that eleven people have died after a single-plane accident this morning in Northern Tanzania,” the Tanzanian air charter said.

The company said access to the remote site had been difficult and the accident took place at around 11:00am.

The names of the passengers and crew will be withheld until their families are notified.

Coastal Aviation managing director Julian Edmunds said they were still in shock from this devastating incident.

“We will be doing everything we can to assist the pending investigation. There are some foreigners among the dead, but also Tanzanians working in the tourism industry,” he said.

Tanzania is a leading tourist destination in East Africa, best known for its wildlife safaris ,Mount Kilimanjaro and flawless beaches. It mostly attracts visitors from Britain, Germany, the United States and Italy.
