Former Balambala MP launch campaign to recapture seat, set to defy elders

GARISSA—Former Balambala Constituency legislator has Friday evening unveiled his bid to recapture the seat.

In a post to his social media platforms, Abdikadir Aden said he would vie on an Ford-Kenya party ticket.

“In consultation with the people of Balambala Constituency, I have decided to contest in the upcoming 2022 General elections on the Ford Kenya (Ford-K) party ticket for the Balambala Constituency seat. InshaAllah,” Abdikadir stated.

In December last year during his meet-the-people tour, Abdikadir, who is now serving as the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP, said he will not heed the Awdhaq Council of Elders decision that picked a different candidate for the Balambala seat.

The clan elders led by sultan Dekhow Sambul a fortnight ago announced, at the council’s shrine, names of candidates whom they had settled on to carry the community’s flag.

In his announcement, Sultan Sambul said that they had, among other things, put into consideration clan dynamics and balance.

But Abdikadir dismissed the elders’ decision describing it as ‘unfortunate and ill-informed’.

It will be the second time Aden is defying the clan elders’ decision.

In 2017, he refused to withdraw and went on to contest but lost to Omar Shurie who was the elders’ choice.
