Garissa residents demonstrate over unfair issuance of national ID’s

GARISSA—A section of Garissa town residents took to the streets on Monday, demanding fair issuance of national identity cards in the area. Waving placards, the residents marched through the town streets to the county commissioner’s office where they blocked the main entrance for over one and half hours demanding audience with the administrator.

The demonstrators, who made up of mainly youths from Madina estate in Garissa town, accused the clerical officers of harassment and discrimination in the issuance of the document.
Ebla Sahal, a woman leader in Garissa asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to come to the rescue of the youths who lack the documents years after they completed high school.
Addressing the demonstrators after meeting with their leaders, area county commissioner James Kianda said that the government will ensure that eligible Kenyans are issued with the national document.
“I assure you that this issue will be resolved and the government will take immediate action and deliver on those grievances,” Kianda said.
Kianda said it is the right of every Kenyan to be issued with the ID card whenever they need it without being discriminated against. The county commissioner said that he will meet all the chiefs and leaders from the areas affected by lack of IDs.
