GARISSA—Members of Garissa County Assembly have suspended operations until July. They said matters will remain the same if their financial demands are not met.

Speaking to Kulan Post after adjourning the sittings, Mr Mustafa Abdirashid, the Garissa assembly deputy speaker said they were joining ttheir olleagues across the country to push for better remunerations. Wajir MCAs have similarly discontinued their sitting until July.

According to Mr Abdirashid, county assemblies are never fifinancially dependent making it difficult for them to play their oversighting role. He said MCAs are poorly paid and that their move is about better salaries.

He argued that MCAs are the only political leaders who are in touch with the voters and that the little pay is not helping them.

He added that the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC) “has a habit of drafting letters meant at shrinking income of the MCAs in the country.”

He noted that the MCAs fail in retaining their positions in every election “because they have nothing to offer to the voter.”

On Wednesday, a section of Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) announced the suspension of sittings in the 47 counties, accusing the government of failing to meet their demands.
