NAIROBI—Former Nation Television (NTV) reported and filmmaker, Yassin Juma is spending the second day in police cells in Muthaiga Police station following his arrest last night by detectives from his home in Donholm, Nairobi.

Mr Juma, according to the police, was arrested following his regular updates on his Facebook and Twitter accounts. He made several updates on his social media accounts concerning last week’s attack on a camp in El Adde in Gedo region of Somalia where at least 60 Kenyan were killed after the Somalia based militant group Al Shabab attacked the camp in dawn ambush.

He was arrested from his home at 8 pm Saturday night by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters and was taken to Muthaiga Police Station.

“I was from the hospital when I was arrested by eight police officers in two cars.

“They took me to my house where they conducted a search before they escorted me to the police station,” he said.

He added that his house was searched by the detectives and later carried with them his flash discs and looked through the contents of his laptops. Although he said he was not aware of the charges he was preferred against, Kulan Post has learnt that he was charges with “misuse of communication gadgets” according to an entry in the Occurrence Book OB 52/23/01/2016.

Maj Gen (Rtd) Nkaissery named Mr Juma as among those journalists “portraying Al-Shabaab in good light while showing security agencies in bad light” when claims of mass graves in Mandera emerged December 2015.

Juma will be arraigned in court tomorrow.
