Student across the border in Somalia will not be admitted again in Mandera schools.According to a new directive by the ministry of education, students who are currently admitted will not be barred from attending Kenyan schools.
Mandera County Director of Education Ismail Barrow said he would implement the new directive in earnest as part of government effort to tame the free-flow of foreign nationals into the country.
“According to available data in our possession, at least 890 foreign students are currently enrolled in both primary and secondary school,” he said, adding that the ministry will do follow-up in order to establish the exact number of schools and their profiles.
Mr Ismail Barrow, however, decried some headteachers commitment to furnish the ministry with exact number of foreign students in their schools.
Mr Ismail added that some students have hidden motives other than education.
“Most students are in school to acquire Kenyan ID cards,” he said, warning private schools to verify the students they admit into their school since most foreign students prefer privately-owned schools to government schools.
According to ministry of education statistics, Mandera County has 202 public primary and 48 secondary schools.
