NAIROBI—Property developers from Kamukunji Constituency on Friday held a meeting with the national construction agency amid concerns over safety in sites and harassment of the developers in Eastleigh and California area.

Led by the area legislator Yusuf Hassan and the chairman of Nairobi Property Developers Abdirahman Shibli, the group challenged the National Construction Authority (NCA) to contain the run-away victimisation and harassment by the inspectors.

“We need to have a streamlined, proper way of handling issues arising from the sites because most of the times, the impromptu inspection and the subsequent arrests are not about safety operations but a witch-hunt,” Shibli said.

He also noted that NCA ‘x’ marks on sites creates “unnecessary alarm and panic among residents and clients.”

To avoid disputes in future, Shibli recommended, among others, a regular engagement between NCA and the Nairobi Property Developers in a bid to lock out “brokers and the witch-hunt.”

“We need to have a constant seminars and workshops to enlighten the property developers and other stakeholders on safety and compliance,” Shibli added.

The Executive Director of the NCA Engineer Maurice Akech welcomed the developers’ proposal to streamline the operations of the projects in Kamukunji area and ensure strict adherence to site safety regulations.

“It’s great that we are having this conversation. It was long overdue. We will take your concerns and recommendations into consideration since we are partners in this industry,” Engineer Akech assured.

Yusuf Hassan, the area MP, said the meeting addressed the various challenges in the industry as well as “reached a consensus on the critical importance of establishing strong collaborative ties with the NCA to effectively tackle these concerns.”

“By cultivating a strong and collaborative partnership between the NCA and Kamukunji Property Developers, we aim to establish an environment that not only fosters the growth of property development but also upholds rigorous compliance with regulations and industry standards,” Yusuf said.
