NAIROBI—The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has unveiled a comprehensive Strategic Development Plan for the next five-year period (2022-2027).

This Strategic Plan (2022– 2027) is a roadmap for the institutional and programmatic growth of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM).

The plan has identified strategic directions to transform SUPKEM into a vibrant and responsive institution that will spearhead Muslim interests in Kenya and beyond.

The plan was presented to the SUPKEM National Governing Council members by the National chairman Al-hajj Hassan Ole Naado during the Annual General Meeting held last Saturday.

The plan outlined the background of SUPKEM, its current status, challenges, and future projections whereas the strategic priorities have been categorized in four main pillars namely: Human Development Programs, Institutional Strengthening, Partnership and Collaboration, and Cross Cutting Areas.

Ole Naado noted that for the first time, SUPKEM has developed its strategic direction and priorities through a very consultative process that has captured the dreams and aspirations of its umbrella membership adding that an inclusive participatory development process was used to collect views in the development of this strategic plan. Stakeholder engagements were also conducted at the national, regional and county levels.

He further pointed out that under the programmes strategic pillar, SUPKEM has identified strategies to design and implement interventions to address constraints in education, economic empowerment, peace building and conflict resolution and climate change management stressing that these are broad programmatic areas that SUPKEM has identified as priority areas and are aligned with Kenya’s National Vision 2030 and Medium-Term Plan (MTP) III (2018 – 2022).

The SUPKEM chair said that Muslim communities in rural and urban areas continue to face a number of challenges and constraints in the education sector including low standards of education, poor education infrastructure, insufficient number of and low capacity of teachers.

He emphasized that under the strategic plan, SUPKEM will seek to promote access to quality education by Muslim communities and support Muslim education institutions.

Ole Naado also noted that SUPKEM is concerned about the prevalence of high poverty levels within the Muslim community and that economic empowerment is constrained by limited public sharia compliant economic opportunities for poor Muslim communities as well as difficulty in accessing the vulnerable groups due to geographical dispersion and that SUPKEM will facilitate and promote access to sustainable sources of livelihoods as well as enhance market access.

The SUPKEM chairman said to achieve the aspirations of its Vision, Mission and Objectives, SUPKEM will require strong governance, leadership, management, and support from  partners and  will work towards creating a value-based leadership, an enabling organizational culture, a robust resource mobilization strategy, strategic partnerships, and demonstrate value through monitoring and measurements of results.
