He thanked all those who wished him well, saying their prayers have been accepted.

“I would like to thank all those who shared their prayers with me. I have been discharged from the Intense Care Unit on Thursday and am now recuperating at my hospital room,” he said.

He similarly shred photos to his Facebook page where he appeared well and in jovial mood.

Sheikh Umal is among the most prominent Somali cleric and has previously meted out controversial fatwas. He is also among the most sought after outspoken clerics by the Somalia based militant group Al Shabab who termed him an “infidel”. They also sentenced him to death in a largely crtisiced fatwa in 2013 after he condemned the Westage attack where 67 shoppers were killed. He said the act was cowardice and un-Islamic.

He was under constant threat  since he made the comments on the Friday khutba that followed the attack.
