NAIROBI—A fundraiser to raise money for Al Fatah Islamic Institute in Wajir was termed successful last night after more than sh 47.9 million was raised towards an endowment (Waqf) project that is billed to sustain the operations of the Madarasa that was established in 1940’s. The institution was then re-established in the 70’s by Sheikh Hassan Okash and colleagues. The fundraiser was orgernise after much of the funds from the Gulf States significantly subsided over the last decade.

Speaking at the event held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi, the Deputy Prime minister William Ruto, who was the chief Guest, urged the Muslim community in Kenya to support the Madarasas, saying it was the only way to tame the wave of radicalisation in the country.

“We need to support such initiatives to defeat the terrorist who continue to tarnish the good name of Islam, so that we can have a new generation that can confidently challenge them on whatever they proclaim” he said.

The orgernisers of the fundraiser had a target of sh 68 million, but managed to raise sh 47.9 Million. The funds will be used to finance an income-generating project whose proceeds will be used to pay the salaries of the teachers.

The event was attended by the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Adan Barre Duale, Wajir Governor, Ahmed Abdullahi and his senator, Abdirahman Ali Hassan olow and all members of parliament from Wajir County. Also present were the Senators Billow Kerrow and Yussuf Haji of Mandera and Garissa respectively. The ambassador of Saudi Arabia and his Somali counter-part were also present.
