MANDERA—Voter registration drive enter its second day across the country but no so for Mandera County residents.

Bags containing BVR kits and other electronic stuffs were still kept at the Mandera IEBC office.

According area IEBC Coordinator, Abdi Kadir Abdullahi the retrieval of BVR kits by the regional ICT was the main cause of the delay.

“Some of the BVR distributed to some IEBC centers failed to function thus making the process difficult,” he explained.

The issue of boundaries has also left many people undecided with Mandera East boundaries set to change.

“There is big confusion here. Mandera Township and Neboi boundaries are not yet clarified,” Abdi Yarow, a resident said.
“We want clarification so that everyone can register the place of their choice. IEBC Should come and clarify these issues,” he demanded.

The boundary lines between Mandera East and Lefey constituencies are set to change due to re-alignment of constituency boundaries in accordance with a Court of Appeals ruling. The Residents are appealing to IEBC officials to come out and to clarify before it’s too late.

Meanwhile in Wajir County, the voter registration exercise has today kicked off in all across the country with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission maintaining that it would add extra days to the registration period.

In Wajir, the registration exercise failed in Ademasajida Ward after all the  seven BVR kits failed.

Mr Mukhtar Abdi Adan, a clerk with the IEBC said the kits could not work since batteries and solar system malfunctioned.

Mr Muktar said only one kit started working at around 3pm.

“Most voters prefer to register in the morning due to high temperatures in the afternoon,” the clerk said.

The ward has 14 polling stations and had 3,072 registered voters in the last general elections.

IEBC is targeting more than 4,000 voters during the mass voter registration exercise in the area.
