KAKAMEGA–On Monday, medical doctors in Kakamega County hospital refused to continue working and started to protest against the arrest of Titus Mumia, the health facility’s administrator.

The hospital administrator was charged with provocation of violence for saying unprintable words to a journalist.

“You bogus and useless journalists this is not a political zone,” are some of the words he used against the scribe before letting the county askaris to attack, leaving him hospitalized.

“I was taking photos of those who were injured on the second floor when the security guards started hitting me with their clubs.

“I have been treated and given medication. My chest, ears and head hurts. They repeatedly beat me on the head before tossing me to the ground violently,” said the reporter

Ocholla also added, “They tried to snatch my camera and mobile phone.” He recorded his statement at the Kakamega Police Station.

He was admitted at the Kakamega referral hospital where he was treated.

Ocholla has become the latest victim of a growing number of assault on journalists in Kenya, who have found themselves ending up as victims of intimidation or attacks from those in authority.

Several Kenyan journalists said that these incidents have intensified over the last three or so months.

“The security and safety of journalists is now a major concern to us and any incidents of harassment, intimidation, unexplained summons by the police, assault confiscation and breakage of cameras and equipment have been reported to us,” the Media Council’s chief executive officer Haron Mwangi said.
