NAIROBI-–Garissa University College will be opened in the next academic semester, Garissa Member of Parliament, Adan Barre Duale, said.
Speaking to KTN Prime, the Majority Leader in the National Assembly said all system were go for the university to reopen its doors to students who have already missed two semesters.
“Garissa University will not remain shut because of insecurity and fear of Al-Shabab,” he said.
The MP, who is also the Chairman of the Muslim Parliamentarians, said the government would not succumb to the demands of the militants group Al-Shabab and that the President would not abandon the people of the region in their hour of need.
“The President is set to visit the region in the coming months and will reward Garissa University with a charter,” he stated.
He also stated that the administration of the institution and tutors were still at the college and are awaiting communication from the ministry of education to go ahead with the normal learning programs.
He urged Kenyans and the government not to abandon the region.
“It’s a moral responsibility on the part of the government and Kenyans not to abandon the region. We must stand together and tell Al-Shabab that they cannot divide us,” he said.
Garissa University College was indefinitely closed following the massacre of more than 147 students and staff in April this year. The attack was claimed by the Somalia-based militant group Al Shabab who demanded that Kenyan army leaves Somalia.
