WAJIR—Two meetings are today set to take place in Wajir where separate sections of the Degodia clan will endorse their preferred candidates for the position of the governor six months to the August elections.

At Sheikh Ibrahim Farm at the outskirts of Wajir town, Eldas legislator and his Tarbaj counterpart Mohamed Elmi will lead a group of clan elders in a meeting duped, “Degodia Consultative Meeting.” That meeting will be invite-only and attendees will be required to carry their invitation cards.

Former Saudi ambassador Mohamed Abdi Mohamud is set to be declared the preferred candidate by the elders who will attend the meeting, an orgernisor told Kulan Post.

Critics termed the event discriminatory, saying the resolution to be reached is predetermined.

Disgruntled elders, the majority, are opposed to the Keynan led meeting will converge at Sunrise Academy in an open forum. In this meeting, the orgernisors say attendees will not be required to present an invitation card to participate in the proceeding.

The elders will reiterate their support and reaffirm the commitment they made last month at the county hall in Wajir in favour of Ahmed Abdullahi.

In late January, elders drawn from the Degodia sub-clans endorsed the incumbent for a second term.

On Friday evening at a Nairobi hotel, few elders met to discuss unity and endorsement drive in favour of Mohamed Abdi candidature.

However, clan elders boycotted the event arguing that the unity of the clan was at stake because members of the Degodia council were not invited.

It was the Degodia council of elders that endorsed Governor Ahmed Abdullahi in 2013.

Today’s parallel meetings come exactly a week after the Ogaden Supreme Council selected its preferred candidate for the coming elections.
