GARISSA—Garissa governor explained why he had a  hard time appointing female Chief Officers to numerous departments, saying clan interest overshadowed the realisation of the the gender balance.

This come after the county assembly vetted and verified the list of chief officers.

Speaking  at one of the hotels in Garissa  on Sunday when he met newly appointed chiefs officers,  governor Ali Bunow said, “Clannism was the biggest challenge as various clans failed to nominate a lady, giving us hard time with little options.”

The appointments was conducted in accordance with clan balancing  as well as political loyalty, Korane added.

However, before the vetting process started, a group of petitioners went o court to challenge the the governors appointment for not considering two- thirds gender rule, but the petitioners later withdrew the case.

“We gazette the vacancies… most of the  female applicants were qualified, but clans were not willing to be represented by a woman,” Korane noted.
