IEBC denies Balambala MP claim, maintains that no foreigners registered as voters at Modika

GARISSA—The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has reacted to claim by Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden made on Saturday after Administration Police officers were caught on camera registering what the legislator said were foreigners.

On his Facebook page Abdikadir shared that, “Strange happenings in Modika voter registration center in Balambala Constituency today ( Saturday 4th February 2017) where a contingent of Administration Police (AP) Officers in two vehicles reg Nos GKB942B and GKB188H accompanied by a foreign registration numbered vehicle with South Sudanese registrations No. CE 955AH ferried strangers (some in full Police combat Uniform) who were enlisted as voters at the center (sic).”

Abdikadir threatened to escalate the matter saying that the AP commandant should not use his power to influence election outcome.

He also challenge the IEBC to react to what transpired at Modika on Saturday.

In a statement to newsrooms, IEBC media and communications manager Andrew Limo said the Administration Police officer were at the polling station to register as voters.

“”The AP  officers from the Quick Response Team (QRT) joined the queue to register as the registration station was the closest place they could register at,” he said.

He added that out of the 25 new application recorded on Saturday, six were from the special QRT unit.

“Out of the 33 transferred voter application, 13 were from the QTR officers.

“So far, there is no evidence of strangers being registered to vote at the registration center,” Andrew clarified.
