NAIROBI—I spent nearly sh 29 million in the recently concluded Jubilee nominations for Ruiru constituency,  nominated member of Parliament Issack Mwaura has said.

At an interview with Citizen TV, Mwaura claimed that the exercise was expensive, adding that elections in Kenya are” too demanding and too expensive.”

Mwaura lost to Simon King’ara who garnered 10, 900 against Mwaura’s 4,632.

“My competitors used more money because they have in the ground for more than a decade while I only joined the campaigns (to secure the seat) only in February,” he said.

Mwaura said politicians in Kenya would be expected to dish out cash before they are taken serious.

“Running for office is very expensive in this country,” he noted.

However, Mwaura said he mostly spend on goodwill projects that were not directly linked to politics or his ambition.

“Some of the money was spent in kind; things I have been donating and programmes I have been running,

“I will not lie to Kenyans. By the end of last year, I had spent about Sh20 million,” he said.

The MP’s campaign was not without drama. In mid last month, Mwaura posted photos on Fcaebook claiming that he was shot at by his competitors.

At a press conference days later, Mwaura was pressed by journalists to prove that he was actually attacked with a gun and that what shattered his car window was a bullet fired by his political foes.

“Are you trying to say that I am faking,” he replied.
