NAIROBI—The government is reviewing the citizenship status of Kenyans who registered as refugees in the early 90’ soon after the central Somali government collapsed.

In a circular released on Monday, the local government in Daadab Sub County invited the affected Kenyans to deregister from the list of refugees in Daadab.

“The de-registration of Kenyans who registered as refugees and refugees who registered as Kenyans has kicked off today (Monday) at Daadab,” the circular signed by the sub-county administrator Suleiman Ahmed said in part.

The circular was widely shared on the internet.

This particular development comes as a reprieve to many Kenyans of Somali descendants who signed up as refugees when Daadab refugee camp was set up to host refugees from Somalia.

In 2014, the leaders from Northeastern Kenya requested for a review, arguing that Kenyan Somalis who registered as refuges are economic refugees, not political.

“We urge the affected persons to come with the national identity cards of the parents, birth certificate, Alien card, school leaving certificate or any other document to prove citizenship,” the circular added.
