NAIROBI—Kigeugeu singer Charles Njagua known for his stage name “Jaguar” has won the Starehe Jubilee primaries, Jubilee Party Appeals Tribunal has ruled.

Jaguar was handed the certificate Wednesday morning nearly a week after he contested the announcement of the incumbent Starehe member of Parliament Maina Kamanda as the winner of the primaries.

“The tribunal hereby overturns the results as declared by the Returning Officer…declaring Maina Kamanda as the winner. We declare Charles Njagua as the winner and candidate of the Jubilee party for Starehe constituency,” the tribunal said in a statement.

Jaguar had protested results that found incumbent Maina Kamanda the winner with 10,374 votes against his 8,391.

His supporters camped at the Jubilee headquarters to demand that Jaguar be declared the winner and the party secretary general assured that only the winner would be handed the certificate.

Initially, the candidates were advised to go for negotiations, but Jaguar turned down the offer maintaining that he was the winner. The party called for a repeat poll and again Jaguar dismissed the suggestion.

“We don’t want negotiations …I will not sit down with anyone and will not go back to the elections,” he said. “I am not ready to talk to him (Kamanda). Democracy is not about negotiation.”
