MANDERA—Deputy president William Ruto has promised that he would consult the security apparatus in Mandera County to partially lift the dusk to dawn curfew ahead of the Ramadan.

In an address at Mandera, Ruto said the residents should be allowed to perform their religious activities which mostly takes place when the sun sets.

Before the deputy president raised the subject, the locals kept on chanting “Ondoa curfew” (Lift the curfew”) and it appeared Ruto banked on the opportunity to make the declaration.

“The Government wishes Muslims well during the Holy Month of Ramadhan as we undertake to review the curfew in Mandera and other areas,” he said.

On late March, the government has for the third time extended the Mandera dusk-to-dawn curfew, citing security problems.

Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery extended the curfew for another 90 days until June 23.

Several civil orgernisations have threatened to challenge the renewed curfew order, saying it goes against the grain of freedom of movement and association.

In a Special Gazette Notice, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the order applies to Mandera Town, Omar Jillo, Arabia, Fino, Lafey Kotulo, Elwak and the environs of the said locations extending to 20 kilometres from the Kenya-Somalia Border.

He indicated that the curfew will be in force between 7pm to 5am daily.
Ruto similarly pledged that he the government will provide free-WiFi in Mandera town.
“The government will set aside sh 170 million for the construction of KMTC in Mandera,” Ruto said, repeating a pledge he made in his last visit to the area same time last year.
Also interesting to note is the promise he made to ear-mark sh 1000 million for flood mitigation, a statement he mentioned last year that has not been realised.
